In baptism (also known as Christening) we thank God for his gift of life and publicly acknowledge his love. Baptism is the rite of entry into the Christian Church, and that is why traditionally the font is sited close to the main entrance of the church. It is far more than just a naming ceremony for the candidate (at whatever age), baptism marks the beginning of a journey with God which continues for the rest of our lives. 

 

Jesus himself was baptised in the River Jordan by John and it marked the beginning of his public ministry. The water of baptism both cleanses and heals, bringing the candidate and the Church to a moment of great rejoicing as we glimpse the glory of God through the mystery of this sacrament.

 

Baptisms at St Michael’s usually take place on the third Sunday in our main service at 11.15am. To keep things personal (and because of space!) we only usually book in one baptism at each particular service.
